Sofia Pires [PT, 1993] is an artist, writer and archival researcher. With a background in Sound and Image at ESAD.CR-IPLeiria, she pursues her artistic practice in photography and film drawn to forms in between the essay, the fiction and the document to examine recurring questions about memory, recollection and storytelling. Having discovered audiovisual archives through the projection booth door, she has recently earned her MA in Heritage Studies: Preservation and Presentation of the Moving Image, at the University of Amsterdam, with a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. She has committed her research to preservation in collaboration with living filmmakers, to artist-run film labs and, ultimately, to the development of frameworks for the preservation of living forms of audio-visual legacy. She has also investigated the craft of film projection, attempting to articulate it more closely with the practices of audio-visual curatorship and programming. full text less text
